On the Coup in Thailand

One of my labmates is from Thailand, and his take on the recent coup is that it is benign and likely to be beneficial for the country. Apparently the former leadership was quite corrupt and a non-military solution did not exist. The coup was nonviolent and the idea is that the military will take over for a short time, install a provisional government, and then hold free and fair elections as soon as possible. That General Sonthi Boonyaratglin is Muslim is apparently not a factor.

Time will tell.
