A Boy's First Rifle

I finally got my son his first rifle. It's a beaut. Feast your eyes on the Savage Cub.

Note the wide smile on the youngster.

It's single shot, shoots .22 short, .22 long and .22 long rifle. We've got some CB .22 shorts that are fairly quiet, shoot 800 fps and are a lot of fun for punching holes in tin cans and cardboard boxes. Much nicer quality than the Cricket or Chipmunk, and for not too much more money. It's also got grooves for mounting a scope. Best of all is the Savage Accutrigger, same trigger as my hunting rifle, and it's superb. Even more best of all, it's for the children!

"Savage Cub". Good nickname for a kid. He'll need to lose the grin, though.

That's a happy boy! As he should be, that's a nice rifle. Bought one for my nine year old a while back. I agree; it's much nicer than a Cricket, though a Chipmunk is ok, based on my experience. Still, the Savage is more substantial, and it has studs for a sling, which is great, as having the kid 'sling arms' when not shooting prevents all sorts of 'wandering muzzle' problems.

If you can shoot in your back yard check out the colibre round from Aguila. It is a .22 case with a 20 grain air rifle pellet. No powder, the priming compound provides all of the energy. Quite quiet, and useful at close ranges.

Aww-man! Is that a Savage accu-trigger?? He's gonna be totally spoiled. When he get's an AR he'll have to have a Timney, Jewell or Gieselle...
