I've just read Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men. One of McCarthy's characters, the crusty old West Texas sheriff, speaks at length about the decline of American society. Oddly enough, the septuagenarian McCarthy eschews the use of quotation marks in the novel's dialogue, which seems a sign of civilizational decline to me.
Gringo, go back to blood letting. Is that old fashioned enough for you?
Read McCarthy's The Road. Your apocalyptic fervor will hit new highs.
